About Me - Page 4

Eventually, I regained my composure and entered the conversation. Despite the fact that it probably made me look as green as I felt, I admitted that I had no idea what I was supposed to do at a convention so I was directed to the one place that every aspiring comic professional should start at… Artist Alley.

I had brought with me to the convention 10 copies of the script that I was going to originally give to Brandon Peterson and Frank Cho, as well as a brief description of the wrong comic and some preliminary character designs that a friend had drawn for my birthday. I should probably point out that he was in no way attached to the project. I'm not saying that in a derogatory way, or even in a legal way, I'm simply saying to point out my own stupidity. Comics were a brand-new beast for me.

Nevertheless, I handed out almost all 10 of those train wrecks that I was carrying around with me, got about six business cards, and introduced myself to as many people as I could.

When I got home that night, after the first day, I began to think. My time at the insight booth and the way that Mark introduced me really had an impact on me. I no longer felt like a geeky little kid hanging on to the coattails of the adults as they held lofty conversations about things that I just don't understand. I was becoming one of them… I wasn't one yet, but I was on the right path.
For me, this was the catalyst moment. The Baltimore Comic-Con 2005.

I couldn't sleep that night… Forest Hill was on my mind. I knew that the script wasn't perfect, but few are. However, I could either be one of those artists that assume every word I write is magic, or I could take the advice of the industry professionals who were judging and try to polish the rough edges of the script.
I chose the latter and reentered the competition for the 2006 tournament… I made the quarterfinals.

A lot has happened since that day but, for now, I think that this is long enough. Keep checking back, because I will definitely be updating this section with more information about my life and my career. Though, expect the forthcoming entries to be a bit more informative, especially to those looking to enter any artistic industry. I've learned a lot over the past three years and I will do my best to educate you on what I have learned, whether it be through guidance or my own stupidity.
I haven't even begun to tell my story.

Presently, I'm working on my film review column, Screensaver, over at SilverBulletComics.com and was recently hired as the Associate Director of Production & Marketing for Blue Scar Productions, the New Zealand-based comic book studio, as well as searching for a few reliable artists to develop my own projects.
